Few following NDP leadership race, Singh preferred by NDP voters, Angus by members

In the seventh wave of the Campaign Research Poll, a national online public opinion omnibus survey conducted among a sample of 1770 Canadian voters, just one quarter are following the federal NDP leadership race closely (26%) and very few say they follow “very closely” (4%).

PLURALITY OF PUBLIC AND VOTERS PREFERS JAGMEET SINGH, NDP MEMBERS PREFER ANGUS

The majority of Canadian voters don’t know who would make the best federal NDP leader (58%), and one seventh think none of the candidates is appropriate (15%). Among those that make a selection, the plurality select Jagmeet Singh (11%) over Charlie Angus (6%), Guy Caron (6%) or Niki Ashton (5%). In June, when Peter Julian was still a candidate, Singh led the pack at 7%.

Among those who will vote NDP in the next election, this pattern is more pronounced, and Singh leads (17%) by even more over Angus (8%), Caron (8%) or Ashton (7%). In June, this figure was 6% for Singh, to 8% for Charlie Angus.

Among the small number of voters who claim to be federal NDP members (n=54), and thus eligible to vote for the leader, Charlie Angus leads (26%) over Singh (18%), Ashton (16%) and Caron (13%). In June, Angus also led this group (19% to Singh’s 16%).

METHODOLOGY

This online poll was conducted between September 8 and 11, 2017 among a panel of 1770 Canadian voters. A probability sample of this size would have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3%, 19 out of 20 times.
