One tenth have rented Airbnb accommodations. Plurality approve of Airbnb, twice as many as disapprov
In the third wave of the Campaign Research Poll, an online omnibus opinion survey conducted among 1,970 adult Canadians, just less than one tenth have rented Airbnb accommodations (8%). This behaviour is especially common to the youngest (14%), in Toronto (12%), among federal Liberals (12%) and among the very wealthiest, especially ($100K to $250K - 17%). Among those who have used Uber’s ride sharing app (12% in total), more than a quarter have rented from Airbnb (28%). It appears there is a significant overlap between the two activities. In addition, Airbnb hosts are much more likely than all Canadians to have stayed at an Airbnb (63%).

Airbnb rated highly for friendliness of hosts
Users give their highest ratings (out of 10) to Airbnb for the friendliness of its hosts (top two
box score of 49%, average score of 8.2 out of 10.0), followed by overall satisfaction (48%, 8.1)
and safety and security (46%, 8.1) The service is also rated highly for cleanliness of accommodations (50%, 8.0), cost (44%, 8.0) and helpfulness of host (44%, 8.0).
One in fifty have rented out their homes as Airbnb hosts
Just 1 in 50 Canadians claim to have rented out their homes as Airbnb accommodations (2%),
and this is especially common to the youngest (4%) and Green Party voters (5%). Incidence is,
once again, higher among Uber users (9%). Those who have rented Airbnb accommodations in
the past are more likely than others to be Airbnb hosts (12%).
Plurality approves of Airbnb
Four in ten Canadians approve of Airbnb (40%), while half this proportion disapprove (18%). As
many as 4 in 10 don’t know enough to have an opinion (42%). Approval of Airbnb is especially
characteristic of the youngest (under 35 - 55%), males (43%) rather than females (38%), not in
Atlantic Canada (29%), in the GTA surrounding Toronto (46%), among federal Liberals (46%) and
among the wealthiest ($80K+ - 55%). Approval of Airbnb is higher among Uber users (68%).
Almost all those who rent Airbnb accommodations from others approve of the service (91%),
while three quarters of those who are Airbnb hosts also approve (76%).
“While usage of Airbnb is not that common, it is apparent that those who use the service have
a very favourable view of it. It is interesting to see the overlap between customers of Airbnb
and those who use Uber, which receives similarly high ratings,” said Eli Yufest, CEO of
