One half disapprove of Sanctuary Cities

In the third wave of the Campaign Research Poll, an online omnibus opinion survey conducted among 1,970 adult Canadians, one half disapprove of sanctuary cities, described as “a city which permits residence by illegal immigrants to help them to avoid deportation” (49%). In contrast, just one quarter approve of these cities (27%) and a similar proportion have no opinion (24%). Approval is characteristic of the youngest (18 to 24 - 36%), in the city of Toronto (a sanctuary city - 33%), among federal Liberals (38%) and the least wealthy (less than $20K - 33%).

“The concept of the sanctuary city is clearly not acceptable to one half of Canadian voters,

and even among the youngest and in a sanctuary city, Toronto, approval does not exceed one

METHODOLOGY

This online poll was conducted between April 3 and 11, 2017, among a sample of 1,970 adult

Canadians. A probability sample of this size would have a margin of error of plus or minus 2%,

19 times out of 20.
